<abstract xml:lang="en">

This article presents a comparative analysis of machine learning methods applicable to predicting applicant conversion rates in digital marketing communications at a higher education institution. The paper substantiates the relevance of data mining in university marketing efforts amid the digital transformation of higher education, as well as the national importance of improving the effectiveness of admissions campaigns and optimizing advertising budget allocation. It examines the current realities and potential of using digital channels for university interactions with applicants, including websites, social media, contextual and targeted advertising systems, and email marketing. It also examines scientific publications by Russian and international researchers on marketing analytics in education and the application of classification algorithms to predicting target audience behavior. The theoretical foundations of four machine learning methods—logistic regression, decision trees, random forests, and gradient boosting—are analyzed in detail and systematized, and illustrations of their operating principles from fundamental sources are provided. This article characterizes the specific features of university marketing data, including pronounced class imbalance, heterogeneity of the feature space, and seasonality associated with the admissions cycle. It also presents a general systematization of these features. All significant criteria for comparing algorithms are highlighted: interpretability, forecasting accuracy, resistance to overfitting, computational complexity, and the ability to handle class imbalance. A comparative table of the advantages and limitations of each method as applied to university marketing data is presented. An important result of this study is the proposed step-by-step strategy for building an analytical system for university marketing communications, including the consistent implementation of models of increasing complexity, taking into account organizational and technical constraints. The prospects for the practical implementation of the analytical system at Donetsk National Technical University are considered. Conclusions are drawn regarding the applicability of each algorithm, and recommendations are formulated for choosing a method depending on the data volume, interpretability requirements, and computing resources.
